Sixth Form Curriculum
We are proud to offer our students the opportunity to study a variety of subjects, and yet able to maintain small teaching classes and a familiarity of teaching styles, in an environment that makes our Year 11 students want to stay on to study in our Sixth Form.
The students can choose from an extensive range of A Level courses, and the school now offers a wide range of BTEC courses, which allow students who do not meet the A Level entry criteria, to achieve success in their chosen vocational subject areas. In addition, we cater for students of all abilities by offering a curriculum which is tailored to provide a mixture of A Level and BTEC courses.
Students will be given a preparation booklet for the courses of their choice. The expectation is that a number of activities and reading takes place before the start of the school year. Students will be provided with this information in the summer term or during the school holiday. For any students new to Bourne End Academy and hoping to join us to study in the Sixth Form, the same information and readings will be supplied. New students should ensure that we have up-to-date and accurate communication details to share this with them during the summer term.
EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION
All Sixth Form students are also invited to write an EPQ towards the end of Year 12, and into Year 13. This is worth one AS Level and carries UCAS points as well as enhancing a university application. The Extended Project Qualification gives students a chance to write a dissertation on a topic of their choice developing skills of analysis, research, evaluation and self-reflection.
We offer a free choice allocation of subjects, determined by students’ early indication of the subjects that they wish to study at Bourne End Academy. This Open Option system allows the majority of students to have their first choice of subject options with a bespoke Sixth Form timetable built around their needs. A benefit of being a small Sixth Form is that we can often amend lesson times and allocation so as to accomodate student wishes.
